Lethal Injections: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

John Oliver discusses the lethal injection process, which is definitely not as pleasant as talking about a squeaking frog.

  • If I remember correctly, the death penalty as a whole was one of the first pieces of LWT John Oliver did and I remain fascinated at how he manages to address (and re-address!) such a subject with an actually working mixture of his usual 'comedic light-heartedness' and a most serious, coherent and compassionate demeanour. One can only hope that his (and everyone else's) messages of how disastrous it is that humans continue to believe having the right to systematically take each others lives reach the right ears, preferably with the brains and bodies attached to those ears taking appropriate action afterwards. But it really seems so nearly hopeless. If moral institutions like Jesus and Gandalf are arguably shaking their heads over humanity's lasting madness in this respect, I somehow fear for John Oliver's efforts...

  • Just for some clarity to all the morons in this chat section: Clayton Lockett raped, anal raped, kidnapped, shot, and buried ALIVE his victim: Stephanie Neiman. Everyone here saying he is not deserving of death is an absolute monster. Most people here would easily agree that Hitler and many of his followers responsible for the death of millions were deserving of death. So many people give into emotion and not logic. Yes, the death penalty is a reserved punishment. But, it establishes a higher morality for society. It says that the VICTIMS (innocent 19 year old girls raped and murdered, millions of Jews killed, etc.) were worth SOMETHING. It says that we VALUE what we lost as a society, and it says that the people who commit these heinous crimes have WILLFULLY given up their value to society (beyond redemption). So many people here think they are morally superior because they are too cowardly to do all that is necessary for their fellow man. That cowardice does not make them right. Soft emotions are not automatically morally superior. Just because something makes you temporarily feel bad or be apprehensive, does not automatically make that thing wrong/bad. These are the emotions and cowardice of the people who were too soft to kill a Nazi trying to round up and kill their fellow man right in front of them. That weakness cannot be tolerated in our society, it makes too much room for those who will take advantage of it. Those who commit heinous crimes against our fellow man MUST have their lives ended as showing the proper respect to and for what was lost so unjustly.

Edited to add: AZ’s statement that prisoners can provide their own lethal drugs reminds me of the Hutu mass murderers who offered to sell bullets to their Tutsi victims. Those who couldn’t afford the bullets got machete’d.

  • 4% of people innocent means 1/25. It's about the same as the number of redheads in the average population. Edit: for the "method of death" conundrum in trying to make it happen without suffering, the answer should be obvious. I don't support the death penalty and this video was excrutiating to even watch. It's one of the most horrifying experiences I could ever imagine. I would want to be shot in the head multiple times if I got stuck in that situation. Why they don't let the prisoners choose just shows how deep the disregard for autonomy is at this stage. The death penalty isn't just taking away the right to life, but the right to death. The fact that they sit in a prison waiting for that horrific day with no escape is savage evil. Cruel and unusual punishment to play upon the person's nervous system and their own instinct for self-protection. There is nothing relevant in the idea justifying the actions, because the actual way it plays out is the epitome of evil. It is the natural conclusion of punishment played out to its final move.

Up to and including in the cases in which he testified at the Supreme Court, by doing the same or an equivalent or higher amount of research concerning his claims to be any kind of, "Expert," whatsoever. The Attorney could then either have the results of the cases with which he participated overturned, or at the very least have them reopened and re-tried. If John Oliver can completely expose and debunk a supposed, "Expert Witness," in support of the anesthetics used in Lethal Injections for an episode of his show, certainly someone else could for the purposes of showing in a Court of Law that the man should not be used as an, "Expert Witness," in ANY State.

But in those rare situations where the person is undeniably guilty and maybe even wants to die, there has to be an easier way. The only argument I heard against firing squad was it doesn’t always make for an open casket funeral, which should be the least of our concerns. As long as they agree to it and it is economically feasible, I would say let them die however they want. Fuck, you could release me on an island and let rich people hunt me for sport. As long as their huge application fees go to cancer research or my kid’s education, it’s a win-win.

  • Let me say first I'm against the death penalty, but the purposefully misinformation used to argue against it here bothers me. I both work in pharmacy and emergency medicine, the paralytic used on inmates is identical to others used when we intubate a patient or prep them for surgery to paralyze the patient. Pavulon, the drug in question, has nearly a zero percent failure rate and every instance of failure was due to poor dosages and human error. So to think there people who died suffered from fire IVs is misleading at best and I feel as if they intentially overlooked this fact. Stick with the ethics of the issue : Using the "not fuck the mom" ethics shouldn't talk about how it's wrong to get drunk first before driving to her house may cause traffic accidents.

    BombalurinaBombalurinaPřed 8 dny
    • Still, the point still stands that the paralytic, by their own admission, is administered solely for the benefit of the executioner. It doesn't make the process any more humane -- it just lets the executioner have some kind of illusion of it being humane just in case the first drug didn't work.

If a rapist or someone who murdered children feels like they're suffocating I'm kind of in support of that. And the cost argument really doesn't matter much either - bring back the firing squad then; a bunch of blanks and one live bullet will cost maybe $20 - that's as cost efficient as you can get. Honestly, the only argument that I think could sway me here is that a good percentage of people were later found to be not guilty. This process for actual rapists and pedophiles is still better than they deserve, but it is terrifying when it happens to innocent people.
